These amazing bridges in northeast India are actually made of living roots. Found in Cherrapunji, one of the wettest areas on Earth, these bridges are grown over several years, only getting stronger as time goes on.
As the roots of the Ficus elastica tree grow they are pulled across a ravine, river, or whatever other span the people wish to cross. Betel nut trunks are then cut down the middle, hollowed out, and used to create root guidance systems.
